At Flow State Solar & Electric, we enjoy projects that require more than a standard installation. Every home is different, and sometimes the most effective solutions come from creative engineering and thoughtful system design.
One recent project perfectly demonstrated that principle.
The Challenge
The homeowner wanted a complete solar and battery backup solution featuring new solar panels and a Tesla Powerwall 3. On the surface, that sounds straightforward.
The complication was the layout of the property.
All of the solar equipment and battery storage were installed on a detached garage, while the home’s utility billing meter was located on the main house—on the opposite side of the property.
This created a significant design challenge:
- Solar production originated at the detached garage.
- Battery storage was located at the detached garage.
- The utility meter and service connection were located at the house.
- The homeowner wanted reliable whole-home backup capability.
Traditional approaches would often require:
- Long conduit runs across the property
- Additional transfer switch equipment
- More complex wiring and installation requirements
- Increased project costs and installation time
Our goal was to deliver a cleaner, more efficient solution.
The Solution: Tesla Backup Switch
After evaluating the site and the homeowner’s goals, our team designed the system around the Tesla Backup Switch.
The Tesla Backup Switch allowed us to create a seamless whole-home backup solution without the need for traditional transfer switches or extensive power runs back to the main service equipment.
By integrating the Backup Switch into the system design, we were able to:
- Provide 100% whole-home backup capability
- Simplify the overall installation
- Reduce unnecessary equipment
- Maintain a clean and efficient system layout
- Deliver a more streamlined user experience
The result is a backup system that automatically responds during utility outages while maximizing the benefits of the solar and battery installation.
Why System Design Matters
Many solar and battery installations follow a standard template. However, properties with detached garages, separate service locations, or unusual electrical layouts often require a more customized approach.
The difference between a good installation and a great installation often comes down to engineering and planning.
At Flow State Solar & Electric, every project begins with understanding:
- The property’s unique layout
- The homeowner’s energy goals
- Future expansion opportunities
- Backup power requirements
- Utility and permitting considerations
This allows us to create solutions that are both practical and cost-effective.
The Result
The homeowner now benefits from:
- New solar energy production
- Tesla Powerwall 3 battery storage
- Automatic backup power during outages
- Whole-home energy resilience
- A clean installation designed specifically for their property
Most importantly, the system achieves these goals without the complexity that would normally come with a detached-garage installation.
